Sveti Vlas History
The village was founded in the 2nd century by the ancient Thracians. Then it bore the name Larissa, even in the 14th century took the name of St. Vlas – the protector of traders, farmer, healer.
On behalf of the saint existed in 14-18 century monastery, burned by countless pirate raids. Sveti Vlas is a revered saint of the Catholic and Orthodox Church.
In the vicinity of the village were located more 4 monasteries. Sveti Vlas is one of the oldest settlements in Nesebar municipality. During the years of Ottoman rule are few known names of the village and all are connected with the monasteries.
After the liberation from Ottoman rule, when Eastern Rumelia was annexed to the Bulgarian principality name of the town was changed to St. Vlas. This name is kept in the official state records after 1886.

The resort of Golden Sands is the largest one on the Northern Black Sea coast (more than 1800 hectares). It is situated 19 km north-east of Varna, 490 km east of Sofia. North of the resort is the village of Kranevo and south is Chaika holiday village. Golden Sands merges with the St. St. Konstantin and Elena Resort and Riviera resort. The area is famous for the purest sand on the Black Sea coast. In Turkish times it was called Ouzounkoum – the long sands.
The resort is abundant in lush vegetation and with the numerous bushes and trees it resembles a real park. The mineral water running out of several big pipes onto the beach, as well as the marvellous wood bordering the Frangen Plateau turn Golden Sands into one of the pearls of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
The constant temperature of about 27°C and the microclimate of Golden Sands throughout the season make it a wonderful place for having a rest and fun.
There is a casino, many bars, mini- golf playground, horse-carriages and attractive carts, water slides, good conditions and equipment for practising all kinds of water sports.

The following establishments are interesting for their architecture, entertainment programme and cuisine: Vodenitsata (The Water Mill), Tsiganski Tabor (Gypsy Tabor), Kosharite (Sheepfolds), Zlatna Ribka (Golden Fish), Kriva Lipa (Crooked Lime-tree) and Dionisus. The Indian restaurant has a chef from India and is of special interest to the visitors. There are a lot of snack-bars, fast-foods, grill- and toast-bars and various other ways to service the tourists.
Some interesting places to visit near Golden Sands are Alaja rock monastery. It hosted Hesychasts in 12th century and has an interesting history. Nowadays only a small part of the frescoes are preserved but the experience of being in a monastery nestled on a high steep rock is unforgettable. The monastery is declared a cultural sight and houses a small museum.
Because Golden Sands is an internationally famous beach resort it gets very busy from May till late September.

It is located on a small peninsula in the Black Sea wich is linked with the land only by a long and narrow isthmus. It has existed for more than 9,000 years. It emerged as a fortified Thracian settlement; afterwards it was a Greek polis, then a Roman colony. Has 2 parts – the Old Town abd the New Town.
Nessebar is best known for the old town (about 9000 years) on the peninsula. No one can say for sure whether the isthmus is natural or man-made. The largest number and best known buildings date from 11th to 14th centuries almost all of them churchies in the so called “picturesque” style: walls intersected by pilasters and lunettes, with stone, brick and ceramic ornaments and arches along the cornice.
Christ Pantokrator church (10th – 11th c.) Some of the churches have stunningly beautiful facades and interiors and are among the best preserved ones in the Balkan Peninsula. The oldest one is the Sveti Ioan Krastitel (St.John the Baptist, 10th -11th century.
Today the old part of the town has regained its original romantic atmosphere: narrow cobblestone lanes, tiny squares, two-storeyed period houses with stone-built ground levels and wooden upper floors jutting above the streets and external staircases, gift shops, pubs, tavern and lovely flower gardens.

Location: Burgas has a population of more than 200,000 people according to recent data, and is the second largest city on the Bulgarian coast.
